Creating Bootable Windows XP, 7, 8 & 1. USB Flash Drive Installers – Techgage. For a long time, Microsoft didn’t sell Windows install media in the form of bootable USB flash drives. Instead, it prefered to stick to old- school DVD media, despite the fact that many notebooks today are too small to even include an optical drive, and many DIYers are building PCs which forego one on purpose. However, things have moved on, and for the first time, Microsoft has begun to sell Windows 1.
USB drives. Previous versions of the OS (XP, 7 and 8. USB drive. Creating a bootable Windows USB drive used to be a chore, but today, one solution can pretty- well suit most people. However, there are times when a flash drive has some quirk that prevents it from working with a particular solution, so for that reason, this article takes a look at five different methods. Benefits of USB Install Media. Even if the target desktop or notebook has an optical drive, there are a couple of reasons to consider first creating a USB- based installer. Admittedly, the time and effort of creating the drive might make it best- suited for system builders, but for people like us, who juggle test machines, USB is a no- brainer. To start, USB media is more durable than disc- based media. How do I make a bootable Windows XP USB drive? Universal USB Installer doesn’t have Windows XP installer. Any other utility? Note: This operating system may be installed over previous versions of Windows XP and Windows Vista by completing a clean installation, or Windows 7, and Windows 8.1. Discs can be easily scratched, while well- built USB flash drives can generally handle a bit of abuse. Then, there’s the convenience. ![]() Ever walk around with a disc in your pocket? It looks a bit odd. For us, performance and reliability are the key reasons why we’ve opted to use USB- based installers in lieu of discs. Even if a DVD has been burned at the highest commercial speeds, it won’t be able to compete with flash memory which offers far improved IOPS performance (operations per second) – it’s the same reason why SSDs are much faster for booting an OS and loading applications than a mechanical hard drive; the seek times are minuscule in comparison. While it’s beyond the scope of this article, those who truly want a fast install experience can slipstream USB 3. SSD target can allow you to install Windows 7 or 8 in under 4 minutes flat. USB Installer Tools & Successes. Over the course of this article, we’re going to be looking at five different solutions that accomplish the exact same thing: Creating a USB- based Windows installer; if one doesn’t work, the next one should (at least, that’s the hope). To give an overview of what to expect from each solution, refer to this success table: Windows 1. Windows 8. Windows 7. Windows XPRufus. Yes*Yes. Yes. Yes. UNetbootin. Yes. Yes. Yes. Nodiskpart. Yes. Yes. Yes. No. Microsoft USB Tool. Yes. Yes. Yes. No. Media Creation Tool. Yes. No. No. No. Given the fact that Windows XP has reached end- of- life status, we’re including a mention of it here because we’re sure someone down the road will be able to make use of this information. There are a couple of things to bear in mind where that OS is concerned, though. For starters, modern UEFI- equipped machines are not designed to support such an aged OS, so chances are good that it will not even install. If the motherboard in question happens to support a legacy BIOS mode, then you should be fine; otherwise, it’s not happening. Also, we could not successfully create the USB installer with the latest version of Rufus, but rather had to backtrack to 1. We suspect that this is due to changes in the codebase to support UEFI. It’s something to bear in mind, especially as Rufus was the only solution of the five that worked for XP. What about Windows Vista? Like Windows 7 and 8, Vista too can be installed from USB media with these same methods, but due to that fact that most have moved on from it in favor of 7, 8. We mentioned Rufus above, and that’s the tool we’re going to lead in here with, as we consider it to be the simplest to use, and the most effective. We discussed the same tool in an article from summer 2. The exception is . If you don’t have an ISO, or a disc for that matter, you’ll need to acquire one from a friend or elsewhere on the Web. There are multiple editions of any given Windows version, but we’re going to list the exact ISOs we used along with their MD5 checksums in case they prove useful. MD5 Checksums. Windows 1. 0 install media can be downloaded directly from Microsoft using the Media Creation tool, which also allows you to create the bootable USB drive at the same time. This process is covered later in the article, which you can read about here. For those who have a Windows setup DVD, a free tool like CDBurner. XP or Img. Burn can be used to rip it into an . Other tools exist that accomplish the same thing, but these are the only ones we can personally recommend. For mounting an ISO image, we’d recommend Virtual Clone. Drive, as it’s free, and not the “free but a total nag” kind of free. NOTE: Some anti- virus applications might interfere with the USB creation process due to the autorun properties involved, so if issues are experienced, we’d recommend temporarily disabling the anti- virus until the process is complete. Using Rufus. Both Rufus and UNetbootin are simple tools for this task, and outside of Rufus’ Windows XP support, both work just the same. However, we prefer Rufus because we find it loads a lot quicker, and feels a bit faster, too. First, choose the appropriate drive under the “Device” menu, and make sure that the file system is NTFS (not FAT3. The other options shouldn’t matter too much, although if you’re planning to install Windows 8 as an official EFI OS, you may wish to peruse the options under the “Partition scheme and target system type” menu. To load the Windows . CD icon to the absolute right of “Create a bootable disk using: ” option can be clicked. After perusing the file manager for the ISO image and accepting it, the “Start” button can be clicked to have the tool work its magic. NOTE: As the program will state, doing this will erase all data off of the flash drive – so backup first. If you have any issues, be sure to check out our Common Problems section below. Using UNetbootin. UNetbootin is a well- known tool as it’s become a de facto choice for turning a bootable Linux live CD into a bootable Linux live flash drive – for that purpose, it still excels. Little do most people realize, it can handle Windows ISOs as well (but as the table at the top of this page shows, it doesn’t support creating a bootable Windows XP drive). Like with Rufus, the appropriate drive should be selected from the “Drive: ” menu at the bottom, and then the “. At this point, the “OK” can be clicked, and the process will get underway. Unlike Rufus, UNetbootin doesn’t erase the flash drive first, so data remains intact – however, if you’re repeatedly writing new ISOs to the drive using the tool, it’s recommended you format after each one, so as to not leave unused scrap files around the drive. NOTE: We’d still recommend backing up personal data before writing an ISO to it just in case. Using Microsoft diskpart. For those who don’t have an ISO, but rather a DVD, diskpart is the solution for you. It does require some command- line usage, but as you’ll see, it’s not too complicated. NOTE: This method will delete the entire flash drive, so be sure to back up personal data first. To make proper use of diskpart, you’ll need to open a command prompt with administrator rights (head to “Start”, type in . Once the prompt is opened, type in . Once the appropriate drive is figured- out, it can be chosen using the . Once selected, it needs to be wiped clean, have a partition created, and then be formatted. The entire command process is summed- up in this block: list disk – shows avaialble disks, look carefully for the one that looks like your flash driveselect disk # – change # to the disk (flash drive) you wish to useclean – removes existing partionscreate partition primaryselect partition 1activeformat fs=ntfs quickassignexit. For those who might want to see this in action, we provide this screenshot: Note that “quick” can be removed off of the format command to run a full format, but that might take minutes to tens of minutes depending on the drive (as it’s more thorough). At this point, the Windows setup DVD can be inserted into the drive, or the ISO mounted, and its files copied over to the root folder of the flash drive. After the process is done, opening up the flash drive in the file manager should mirror the contents of the Windows DVD/ISO. Using Microsoft Windows 7 USB/DVD Tool. After the Windows 7 launch, Microsoft released its own USB creator tool that supported its official ISOs. While the company no longer promotes the tool, it supports both 7 and 8 just fine, so some might prefer to use it over the other solutions. Once downloaded and opened, an ISO must be chosen. After that, the “USB Device” option needs to be clicked (this same tool can also burn straight to a DVD). At the last screen, the appropriate flash dive needs to be selected from the menu, and after hitting “Begin copying”, the entire process will be complete after just a couple of minutes. Truthfully, Microsoft’s tool here might be the easiest of them all to use, but because the company isn’t promoting it in any way, shape, or form (note that it’s called the Windows 7 USB/DVD tool, and not Windows 7 & 8 USB/DVD tool), we feel that it’s right to quicker recommend the other (often updated) solutions first. Using Windows 1. 0 Media Creation Tool. Optical is so last century! Our boot media of choice has switched to much faster flash drives, namely with USB 3. If you plan to install Windows 1. Windows 7 or 8, creating a bootable flash drive is the first step. The process with Windows 1. Windows 7 and 8/8. Battlefield Games - EA. Splash Animator was an animation tool originally developed for pen- based computing devices, but due to the small size of the Future. Splash Viewer, it was particularly suited for download over the Web. Macromedia distributed Flash Player as a free browser plugin in order to quickly gain market share. As of 2. 00. 5, more computers worldwide had the Flash Player installed than any other Web media format, including Java, Quick. Time, Real. Networks and Windows Media Player. As Flash matured, Macromedia's focus shifted from marketing it as a graphics and media tool to promoting it as a Web application platform, adding scripting and data access capabilities to the player while attempting to retain its small footprint. In 2. 00. 0, the first major version of Action. Script was developed, and released with Flash 5. Actionscript 2. 0 was released with Flash MX 2. UI components, and other advanced programming features. The last version of Flash released by Macromedia was Flash 8, which focused on graphical upgrades such as filters (blur, drop shadow, etc.), blend modes (similar to Adobe Photoshop), and advanced features for FLV video. Macromedia was acquired by Adobe Systems in 2. Macromedia product line including Flash, Dreamweaver, Director/Shockwave, Fireworks (discontinued) and Authorware is now handled by Adobe. In 2. 00. 7, Adobe released Adobe Flash CS3 Professional, the first version released under Adobe, and the ninth major version of Flash. It introduced the Action. Script 3. 0 programming language, which supported modern programming practices and enabled business applications to be developed with Flash. Adobe Flex Builder (built on Eclipse) targeted the enterprise application development market, and was also released the same year. Flex Builder included the Flex SDK, a set of components that included charting, advanced UI, and data services (Flex Data Services). In 2. 00. 8, Adobe released the historic tenth version of Flash, Adobe Flash CS4. Flash 1. 0 improved animation capabilities within the Flash editor, adding a motion editor panel (similar to Adobe After Effects), inverse kinematics (bones), basic 3. D object animation, object- based animation, and other advanced text and graphics features. Flash Player 1. 0 included the first in- built 3. D engine (without GPU acceleration), that allowed basic object transformations in 3. D space (position, rotation, scaling). Also in 2. 00. 8, Adobe released the first version of Adobe Integrated Runtime (later re- branded as Adobe AIR), a runtime engine that replaced Flash Player, and provided additional capabilities to the Action. Script 3. 0 language to build desktop and mobile applications. With AIR, developers could access the file system (files & folders), and connected devices (joystick, gamepad, sensors) for the first time. In 2. 01. 1, Adobe Flash Player 1. For content in a single format (such as just text, video, or audio), other alternatives may provide better performance and consume less CPU power than the corresponding Flash movie, for example when using transparency or making large screen updates such as photographic or text fades. In addition to a vector- rendering engine, the Flash Player includes a virtual machine called the Action. Script Virtual Machine (AVM) for scripting interactivity at run- time, with video, MP3- based audio, and bitmap graphics. As of Flash Player 8, it offers two video codecs: On. Technologies. VP6 and Sorenson Spark, and run- time JPEG, Progressive JPEG, PNG, and GIF capability. Flash Player 1. 1 introduced a full 3. D shader API, called Stage. D, which is fairly similar to Web. GL. Flash Video has been a popular choice for websites due to the large installed user base and programmability of Flash. In 2. 01. 0, Apple publicly criticized Adobe Flash, including its implementation of video playback for not taking advantage of hardware acceleration, one reason Flash is not to be found on Apple's mobile devices. Soon after Apple's criticism, Adobe demoed and released a beta version of Flash 1. GPU hardware acceleration even on a Mac. Flash 1. 0. 2 beta, released December 2. Flash Player supports two distinct modes of video playback, and hardware accelerated video decoding may not be used for older video content. Such content causes excessive CPU usage compared to comparable content played with other players. Software Rendered Video : Flash Player supports software rendered video since version 6. Such video supports vector animations displayed above the video content. This obligation may, depending on graphic APIs exposed by the operating system, prohibit using a video overlay, like a traditional multimedia player would use, with the consequence that color space conversion and scaling must happen in software. Such video is displayed above all Flash content, and takes advantage of video codec chipsets installed on the user's device. Developers must specifically use the . Flash Player internally uses technologies such as Direct. X Video Acceleration and Open. GL to do so. In tests done by Ars Technica in 2. Adobe Flash Player performed better on Windows than Mac OS X and Linux with the same hardware. Flash allows sample rates of 1. Hz. It cannot have 4. The one which once had good hardware configuration but now those are considered outdated. Why not revive your old computer with Linux? I am going to list seven beginner friendly lightweight Linux distributions that you can use on your older PC. Best Lightweight Linux distributions. Let’s start from the #7 of the list and move on towards number one. Linux Lite. As the name suggests Linux Lite is the lite weight Linux distribution that does not need geeks’ hardware to run it, but a beginner will be able to use it on older computers easily. Linux Lite is based on Ubuntu LTS (Long Term Support) releases. The LTS version gives support for 5 years which means once you install Linux Lite on your computer, it will provide updates for 5 years. Linux Lite Team says: “Linux Lite is fully functional out of the box, this means that you won’t have to install extra software when you boot your computer for the first time.” This is pretty helpful for newbies as they don’t need to go for some basic apps search to install. Most of the basic apps are built in with OS. Current release Linux Lite 2. There is added support for ex. FAT, Android MTPFS, VPN connections, Bluetooth and NTP and many more changes made in this release. Some of the pre- installed apps are Firefox for web browsing, Thunderbird for emails, Dropbox for Cloud storage, VLC Media Player for Music, Libre. Office for office, Gimp for image editing and Lite tweaks to tweak your desktop. Minimum hardware requirements: 7. MHz processor. 51. RAMVGA screen 1. 02. Crunch. Bang++Crunch. Bang++ is also known as CBPP or #!++ or Crunch. Bang Plus Plus. Crunchbang++ is the clone of dead Linux distribution Crunchbang Linux that was known for simplicity and lite weight. Crunch. Bang++ supports old computers and runs without any issue. Crunch. Bang++ is based on Debian 8 (Jessie) with the minimal design interface and built around the minimal and lightweight Openbox window manager. This project is continuing with the same aim to provide easy to use & lite weight Linux with good functionalities. That’s why Crunchbang++ includes a minimal design, simple & sleek interface. Some of the default applications in Crunchbang++ are Geany IDE, Terminator terminal emulator, Thunar File Manager, Gimp for image editing, Viewnior image viewer, VLC Media Player for music, Xfburn CD/DVD burning software, Iceweasel for web browsing, Transmission torrent client, Gnumeric spreadsheet editor, Evince pdf viewer, g. You can download Crunchbang++ Linux torrent from their download page. Download Crunch. Bang++5. Bodhi Linux. Another lite Linux distribution is Bodhi Linux that gives life to older PCs & Laptops. Bodhi Linux is quite known for its lightness. There are not much software pre- loaded on Bodhi Linux so it’s not big in size and when installed on older computers it runs freely without using much memory. But do not think that you can not install other applications, you can install any application that you need. The latest version of Bodhi Linux is 3. Some of the new features are: Other than this, Enlightenment makes the distro a lot faster. Enlightenment is faster than other window managers that are used in other Linux distributions. If you have any problem using Enlightenment or any other function of Bodhi then there are helpful guides written by the team. By default Bodhi Linux does not include many applications but there are some basic applications such as Ephoto for Graphics, Midori for web browsing, e. Pad text editor but, unfortunately, there are no applications for Multimedia. But don’t worry! As I said above you can install other applications through App Center. PPAs meant for Ubuntu also work in Bodhi Linux, mostly. Minimum hardware requirements. Lubuntu. Fourth one in our list is Lubuntu, as the name suggests a member of Ubuntu family but based on LXDE desktop environment. Lubuntu also supports older computers that had been buried (Just kidding! You can also use Lubuntu on modern hardware). Lubuntu is based on Ubuntu but has less packages and very lite. Lubuntu is the lightest derivatives of Ubuntu so it specializes speed, support with older hardware. If you were using Ubuntu earlier then you will not find Lubuntu unfamiliar. Software and repositories are same so you will get all software that you were using on Ubuntu from their repositories. But take care of your system when installing any application. Select an application that can consume less resources of your old computer. Don’t use heavy apps. Compared to other light Linux desktops like Puppy or Sparky Lubuntu has more applications already installed. GPic. View for image viewing, MTPaint for paint, Evince for PDF, Audacious for music, Gnome- Player for video, guvcview for webcam, Chromium for web browsing, Sylpheed for email, Pidgin for instant messaging, Transmission for torrent, Gnumeric for spreadshee, Abiword for office, Xpad for notes and there are even more. Perhaps you are confused if Lubuntu is a light weight system or loaded with every applications. Well that’s what I don’t know. But overall Lubuntu works good on older computers and consumes less system resources. Minimum hardware requirements: A Pentium II or Celeron system with 1. MB of RAM is probably a bottom- line configuration that may yield slow yet usable system with a standard lubuntu desktop. ISO require your CPU to have Physical Address Extensions, or PAE. Sparky. Linux. In our list #3 is Sparky. Linux. Sparky. Linux is another lightweight but at the same time Sparky. Linux also targets modern computers so it has another version which is loaded with applications and make the distro run instantly after installing. Did I tell you what distro Sparky. Linux is based on? Actually Sparky. Linux is based on Debian testing branch and it has several desktop environments including LXDE, Open. Box/JWM, e. 17, MATE, Razor- QT, Cli and the Game. Over edition. Razor- QT is quite faster than other mentioned except Cli (Command Line Interface). As said earlier, it has two editions: Full edition and Base edition. Full edition is loaded with applications so that you do not have to install them manually, but that is not for our old computers. The Base edition is not loaded with heavy applications so it’s light and does not use much system resources. Although Sparky has its own repositories to install most of the applications. The list of applications installed by default is different for different Sparky, Full, Base and Gaming edition and is available below each edition on the download page here. Minimum hardware requirements: i. MB RAM – LXDE, e. Openbox, Game. Over. MB RAM – MATE, Razor- Qt. GB of hard drive or flash USB stick for installation – 1. GB recommended. 2GB of hard drive or flash USB stick for installation (CLI edition)Download Sparky. Linux. 2. Puppy Linux. Puppy Linux is one of them, Puppy Linux latest release is Puppy Linux 6. CE that is only 1. MB in size. It’s very small. This small Linux distribution can be booted with a small size USB stick. Puppy Linux can be booted live with either a CD/DVD/USB and onceits booted you can eject CD/DVD/USB and Puppy Linux will run smoothly. It’s so tiny that it saves everything on RAM which makes it very fast. You can even save any data on the same USB that you are booting the Puppy Linux from. The Quirky 7. 0. 3 release is even smaller than tahrpup CE, it is only 1. MB. Puppy Linux uses JWM and Openbox window managers by default which is quite simple to use so beginners will have no problem getting familiar with it. If you are using Puppy Linux on old computer then this will more likely to fit into that but do not demand those high graphics applications. Try to complete your work with light applications and tools. Because Puppy Linux is built to be fast so it does not come along with bundles of applications. But it does have some basic apps. For example, Abiword for word processing, Gnumeric for spreadsheets and assorted graphics editing and media playback programs. Personally I use Puppy Linux to recover data or to repair my currepted OS and believe me, it helps me a lot. Minimum hardware requirements: CPU : 3. MHz. RAM : 6. 4MB (recommended 2. MB)Download Puppy Linux. Tiny Core. Be ready to be amazed by the Tiny Core. I bet Windows’ smallest image editing app will be heavier than Tiny Core Linux. It is just 1. 5MB in size! It takes more time download a low quality small video clip than the Tiny Core. Well that was about the size of distro but what is inside will also amaze you. It comes with the minimal interface and very few applications installed. If you have an ancient computer then try this out and see the magic. It boots faster than any other OS. The Tiny Core Linux was forked from Damn Small project but now it is completely independent. This small distro comes with FLTK/FKWM and Busy. Box desktop by default. You will find many things missing, for example, hardware graphics but don’t worry you can install them manually if you want. There are three editions of Tiny Core which are Core, Tiny Core and Core. Plus. Core is the base system that has only CLI (Command Line Interface). This will amazingly fit inside the old computer but as this is a CLI so an experienced/advance users can operate it well. The current version of Core edition is only 9. MB. A beginner can be familiar with this edition of Tiny Core Linux. The current release of Tiny. Core is only 1. 5MB in size. It is recommended for new users who only have access to a wireless network or who use a non- US keyboard layout. It includes the base Core System and installation tools to provide for the setup with the following options: Choice of 7 Window Managers, Wireless support via many firmware files and ndlswrapper, non- US keyboard support, and a remastering tool. The current release of Core. Plus is only 7. 2MB in size. |
